Essential Tips & Warnings for Austrian Roads

Plan Your Route
Use the ASFINAG app or website to check for roadworks, closures, and real-time traffic. This can save you hours, especially during peak holiday seasons.

Winter Driving
From November 1st to April 15th, winter tires are mandatory in wintery conditions. Snow chains may be required for certain mountain passes. Check local forecasts before you travel.

Speed Limits
General speed limits are 130 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on open roads, and 50 km/h in towns. Be aware of variable speed limits based on traffic and air quality (IG-L zones).

Emergency Corridor ('Rettungsgasse')
In a traffic jam, it is legally required to form an emergency corridor for rescue vehicles. Move to the far left or far right of your lane. Failure to do so results in a significant fine.
